  • How often should I go to my dentist for a checkup?

Patients should come in every six months for a checkup. Additional checkups may be required on a case to case basis.

  • How does a tooth decay?

Tooth decay is caused by a substance called plaque, a cream-colored, bacteria laden film which develops on the teeth. Bacteria in plaque eat the starches and sugars left in our mouth and create an acidic byproduct which dissolves our teeth. To prevent and reduce the risk of getting a cavity, dentists recommend flossing and brushing your teeth after every meal. Frequent checkups will also allow doctors to inspect and quickly resolve any problems the patient may have before the condition worsens.

  • What is gum disease?

Gum disease is a serious oral disease that many people are affected with. There are many different types of gum disease, the two most common being gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is caused by bacteria in the teeth from plaque and hardened tartar, a hardened plaque that can only be removed by professional cleaning. When gingivitis is left untreated, it can lead to periodontitis which is an inflammation of the gums. If not treated in time, the bacteria will reach below the gum line, causing the body to react by receding the gums. The bacterial toxins then break down the bone and tissue that hold the teeth in place. If not treated in time, the affected teeth may have to be removed. To prevent such harsh actions, care for gum disease is required and is very simple. Proper flossing and brushing after each meal will greatly reduce the chance of gingivitis from occurring.

  • How do I maintain good oral hygiene?

To maintain good oral hygiene, we recommend flossing and brushing after every meal and reducing daily intake of sugary or acidic foods. Drinks such as coffee and tea are known to stain teeth when consumed daily. Besides diet, smoking can also greatly affect the staining of a person’s teeth and cause bad breath. Take good care of your teeth because they are meant to last a lifetime!
